Truth be told, I never wore a mask before the COVID-19 pandemic. I had only seen them used in the medical field, occasionally in food service, and on news programs showing people wearing masks in areas affected by a widespread outbreak or air quality issue. There’s a lot of discussion and debate about whether or not face masks protect against viruses, diseases, germs, and allergens. Personally, my family and I have chosen to take precautions by using face masks when in the company of others. So far, wearing them has been helpful to us. The mask options are vast, but we have narrowed down our choices to five types of face masks.

KN95 has 5-layers of protective filtration. 95% particle filtering efficiency. Highly recommended by health professionals for its ability to block harmful substances from entering the respiratory system while breathing. V-shaped, duck-bill design.

We use KN95 masks in heavily crowded public places or anywhere we have to be for prolonged periods (work, airport, grocery store, shopping mall, large gathering, etc.). I admit, the KN95 mask isn’t the most stylish look, but it provides extreme protection. I also find I have to be intentional about inhaling and exhaling deeply because the filtration is thick.

KF94 has 4-layers of protective filtration. 94% particle filtering efficiency. Breathable. Popular for its fish-shaped, 3D structure design that forms to face shapes.

We use KF94 in public places regularly, especially when we want a more face-contouring, sophisticated look.

4-ply face masks are thin and lightweight and offer one more filtering layer than 3-ply. Breathable. Rectangular, pleated design.

We use 4-layer masks for drive-thru stops, yard work, and other low risk exposure activities.

We prefer black disposable masks with hidden nose wire. I’ve found Amazon has one of the largest selections of mask types in multiple colors. I can usually find the masks I want and get fast delivery.

The UA Sportsmask is designed to be worn for prolonged periods and made of material that’s face-conforming, breathable, cooling, water-resistant, anti-microbial, and sun protective. It has a hidden nose wire for adjustment.
Because our son is an athlete, we needed to find a mask he could use for working out and playing sports. My husband researched and decided to go with the UA Sportsmask for its overall design and function. And it has been the best fit. We have bought them online and in the store. Although its shape slightly resembles the KN95, it looks quite sporty on the face.

From the Johnny Was 5-Piece Silk Charmeuse Face Mask Set at Saks Fifth Avenue. Made from repurposed and assorted silk print fabric with cotton lining & elastic side bands. No nose wire.

Recently, my sweet sister sent me this beautiful silk mask set as a surprise gift. And I absolutely love the masks! For added protection, I wear another multi-layer adjustable nose wire mask underneath. I love these silk masks because they turn a mask into a stylish statement piece. My set came with floral and animal silk prints. Just know, the prints are unique so each set might be different than the featured images on the Saks Fifth Avenue website.

Mask Rules We Live By
  • Take face measurements and check manufacturer’s mask dimensions of fabric/material coverage & ear loops to be sure the mask will fit face comfortably.
  • Assess risk of exposure per activity or outing in order to choose mask accordingly. Double mask if necessary.
  • Clean and sanitize hands before, during, and after mask use. Remember frequent touching of mask while wearing it can contaminate it.
  • Wear mask over nose and mouth for best protection. Adjust straps and nose wire according to manufacturer’s instructions for proper and secure fit.
  • If a mask change is necessary in public, try to do it away from people and do it as quickly as possible. Avoid removing mask in public places whenever possible.
  • Avoid prolonged use of a mask that’s been worn in public or has gotten wet. Best to throw away disposable mask after wear it once and change to a new one. Wash reusable mask between wears and let dry completely before use.
  • Be mindful of close contact in intimate settings with people who don’t live in your household. Wear mask when visiting immune compromised people, going into residences, beauty appointments, health appointments, or while using transportation services.
  • If preferred, wear a mask when having residential service appointments and ask the representative to wear a mask while in your home. Or you can postpone service until you are ready to allow people into your residence.
  • Wear mask whenever it makes you feel safe. Stick with what’s comfortable for you, even when masks are optional.
