I got to see The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess for the first time! It was all I could have hoped for. The music, cast, costumes, and set were incredible. Well done Fort Worth Opera on opening night!

The story is about Porgy, a Black man who is a disabled beggar, and his love for a woman named Bess, who is having life troubles with men and substances. The themes are heavy and the music genres mixed. I remember listening to an album of Porgy and Bess at my college library back in the day and being mesmerized by the recording. Even that couldn’t have prepared me for the real thing. Being there to see and hear everything, especially “Summertime”, was breathtaking! Each artist delivered a phenomenal performance. It was an unforgettable night!

The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess runs April 26, 28, 30, 2019 at Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth TX.
