For the first time, I had the opportunity to design and oversee the renovation of a powder room in an old home. This was not a complete demolition, and the only two items salvageable were the toilet and the vanity cabinet base. The space is less than 30 square feet of floor area and only 8 feet high ceilings, making it intimate. The challenge for me was to maintain the space’s intimacy while simultaneously making a significant impact. I decided to use beadboard for the walls and ceiling with simple moldings. Running the beadboard vertically on the walls and matching the ceiling lines with the longest walls, followed by painting it all white, created an anchor that conveyed a cozy and timeless yet expansive feel. Subsequently, the most striking elements were introduced through the modern choices of flooring, countertop, sink, faucet, mirror, and lighting. The vanity cabinet underwent a complete facelift, including stripping and refinishing with a dark paint to ground the space along with the addition of new knobs and hinges. A newly installed vent fan, characterized by its clean lines, seamlessly integrates into the surrounding environment. The total budget was less than $7,000.
